The secret is in the prep! Our yarn comes in skeins, which are beautiful for showcasing the hand dyed colors but do need a little winding before you start your project. This process is called caking your yarn. You wind the skein into a neat, compact cake that feeds smoothly from the center as you work, tangle-free!

The easiest way to do this is with two simple tools: a yarn swift (which holds the skein open while you wind) and a yarn winder (which transforms it into that satisfying little cake). Many crafters consider these a worthy investment if you work with skeins regularly.

No tools? No problem! There are plenty of clever ways to cake yarn by hand: using the back of a chair, your knees, or even a helpful friend to hold the skein while you wind. It just takes a little creativity and patience.

Good news for anyone who dreads hand washing their projects: our yarn is superwash merino, meaning it's been treated to be safe in the washing machine! Just toss it on a cold, gentle cycle with a mild detergent and you're good to go!

One important note: superwash does not mean superdry! Always lay your finished item flat to dry rather than putting it in the dryer, which can cause shrinking and distortion.

That said, our personal go-to is still a gentle hand wash in cold water with a small amount of mild detergent — we love plain old Dawn dish soap for this! Every washing machine is a little different, and hand washing is just that much gentler on your hard work. If you've spent hours on a project, and you're nervous about tossing it in the washing machine, it might be worth the extra few minutes to play it safe.

Short answer: no! Our yarns are colorfast and should not bleed when washed.

We take color security very seriously from the start of our dyeing process. Every skein is steam set in our warming cabinets for around 8 hours at a pH of 4, which ensures the dye is fully exhausted into the fiber before it ever reaches you. After that, we hand wash and spin dry each skein individually. This not only removes any remaining excess dye, but also lets us catch any potential issues before they leave our hands and reach yours.

You may notice very slightly tinted water on your first wash or two, and that is normal. But we're talking trace amounts of excess dy. NOT streaks of color. You should never see bright, vivid color washing out into the water.
